Edmonton McKernan is a south central neighbourhood which is situated between, 72 Avenue and University Avenue and 109 Street and 114 Street. It was actually part of the City of Strathcona, till it
was annexed in 1912. This area was named for an important Strathcona businessman.
Real Estate: The area actually had to be drained before the majority of its development in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. Currently, the majority of homes are detached single family, but there are duplexes, and there are some new developments. Because most of the homes are older and the proximity to the University, there is a high percentage of renters.
Culture, Parks and Amenities: McKernan Park, Ellingson Park, Belgravia and Charles Simmonds Park. Proximity to the University, and vibrant Whyte Avenue offers a variety of venues for entertainment, businesses, professional offices, restaurants and other services. Seasonally, nearby is the Strathcona Farmer’s Market, and during early August the well known Fringe Festival. The University Hospital is within walking distance, as is Canadian Blood Services.
Schools: University of Alberta main and south campus, McKernan Elementary / Junior High School. Fresh start is the High School, Learning Support Services, near by Parkallen and Allendale School.
Transportation: the newly opened LRT station is a major link to the rest of the city. Buses in this area are plentiful, as are roadways for vehicles.
